The origins of hoop earrings
Timeless by nature, hoop earrings have crossed eras and civilisations, carrying many different meanings throughout history. Their origin can be traced back to around 2500 BC within the African civilisation of Nubia – a region of modern-day Sudan along the Nile. Back then, they symbolised wealth and beauty and were even believed to protect their wearers. Worn by both women and men, they were considered a sign of power. Julius Caesar himself is said to have worn them as a mark of authority. Their cultural symbolism strengthened during the eighteenth century, when hoop earrings became the only jewellery allowed to be worn by enslaved people. It was during this period that the term “créole” is thought to have first appeared. The twentieth century marked the golden age of hoop earrings.
