Duperré School students talk to the Georgettes

As part of the "Upcycling Les Georgettes x Duperré" project, the school's students showed us their "work in progress" created from our scrap materials. All of them are currently studying for a DSAA1 Mode Prospective Matériaux Arts de vivre (equivalent to a Master's degree, in fashion and materials). They agreed to answer our questions and to share their experiences, their inspirations and their feelings with us, following their visit to our workshops in Ardèche.

What does Upcycling mean to you?
Clémence : it's part of my daily life. I love going to thrift stores, hunting down my clothes and transforming them. I also buy materials by weight, at La Réserve des arts - l'Entrepôt, Porte de Pantin. There are lots of used materials there: wood, plexiglass, textiles, leather scraps, etc. Upcycling is the future, especially in view of the current environmental problems..

Robinson : it's the idea of uniting paradoxes. The materials can be hybrid and join together. Upcycling involves creating links between seemingly opposing environments by steering an existing object into something else.

Thaïs : for me, Upcycling represents both my whole study project, but also resources, materials and also, wonderful encounters. First of all because I started doing textile illustration using fabrics handed down by my grandfather, who works in the construction industry. Secondly, because I continued to use existing material by going to upholsterers to create my patchworks. One of them taught me a lot, and even showed me his workshop!

Popline : creating from old rather than new materials is a real drive. There is so much availability!

Laure-Anne : at school, many of us reclaim material to give it new life. What I like most of all is to bring it back to life and make it something precious.

What did the visit to our Ardèche workshops inspire you to do?
Aurélie : it was my first time visiting large spaces like this. What impressed me the most were all the steps involved in creating a small object. The way each person is involved, it was very beautiful. Being able to talk to the people who worked there, how you go from a very manual skill to programming, etc.

Popline : I was very surprised at how many steps (polishing, varnishing, etc.) it took to make something that looks simple, like a creole, for example. I didn't expect it to be so complex. I was particularly fascinated by the stamping technique.

Apolline : I was very impressed with the manufacturing process. The production of chains, especially.

Clémence : I was very moved to meet passionate artisans, to discover their knowledge, their expertise, their precision in the way they do things. You can tell that they want to pass on what they know and they seemed to be very happy to welcome students.

What did you like in particular about Les Georgettes' creations?
Aurélie :
 the concept of having multiple possibilities from a single object, that interchangeable side where everyone can find something they like, no matter what their style. It's very creative. I discovered that the world of jewellery could appeal to me thanks to the partnership with Les Georgettes!

Laure-Anne : the versatile side of the brand, its made-to-measure concept as well as the fact that you can play on the many different options and choose what you want.

Clémence : the freedom to make the jewellery of your dreams using various models of brass bracelets and different leathers... it can apply to all tastes and personalities. As part of the project with Les Georgettes, it was great to start with existing materials to work on them in one's own image and reappropriate them.

Robison : I find it interesting that there is a two-way relationship between the materials. The fact that it is interchangeable too. A double-sided design that offers different points of view and allows freedom and creativity.

Apolline : diversity, reversibility, being able to offer something personalised, having several possibilities.

What is the most important thing for you when creating?
Aurélie :
allowing interpretation, showing the spectators what they would not have seen while knowing how to stand back to ensure accuracy in the result we wish to achieve.

Popline : successfully conveying the project's message. This is even more important than its purpose! To do this, I will do a lot of documentation and use it as a library.

Thaïs : being able to observe everything, even on a simple walk, and make connections. Creation is our life! When we don't produce, we feel guilty and useless.

Clémence : reimagining something that already exists. Changing the shape, size, colour, etc. Finding the right balance to adapt an idea to materials. If inspiration comes from exhibitions and books, it can come simply from a door and its architecture.

Robinson : always being able to think outside the box and understand what discourse you want to have. Knowing how to renew yourself. Training the eye elsewhere than in museums and art galleries, for example by looking at the street and pavements. Knowing how to go beyond and look at the things we usually don't pay attention to.

Laure-Anne : enrichment, in particular. Magnifying a fabric or a material. I grew up near the sea so I am very inspired by the elements of the beach, like shells for example, and in particular mother-of-pearl.

Apolline : telling stories, inviting people to dive into another universe while at the same time knowing how to set limits. In my projects, I always try to capture the playfulness and wonder of childhood, which can be found in stories, for example.
